What is black mastic (cutback adhesive)?
"Cutback mastic" — sometimes called black mastic, asphaltic mastic, or asbestos floor adhesive — is a viscous black or dark brown adhesive used to install vinyl floor tile, vinyl sheet flooring, and some early laminate products from roughly the 1920s through the late 1980s. It was "cut back" with petroleum solvents to be spreadable.
Asbestos content in cutback mastic ranges from 5% to 30% by weight, depending on manufacturer and era. It was used to improve heat resistance, add structural integrity, and slow drying time.
MIOSHA explicitly prohibits mechanical chipping, dry sanding, dry grinding, and high-speed buffing of asbestos mastic. If a contractor proposes "we'll just sand it off," walk away immediately.
