The Transition Era
Why 12×12 tile requires testing — every time
The 12×12 format spans the entire transition period when manufacturers were phasing asbestos out of floor tile. A 12×12 tile installed in 1965 is almost certainly asbestos-containing. The same tile installed in 1984 may or may not be. The only way to know is PLM lab analysis.
This is why we test every project regardless of the homeowner's assumption. We've found positive results in tiles homeowners were certain were asbestos-free, and negative results in tiles they were certain were positive. The tile doesn't tell you — the lab does.
