Identifying 9×9 vinyl asbestos tile

9×9 VAT (vinyl asbestos tile) was the dominant residential floor tile in the U.S. from the 1940s through the early 1970s. In Southeast Michigan, it's found in virtually every pre-1975 basement and in many kitchens, laundry rooms, and utility areas of that era.

Visual characteristics
  • 9-inch × 9-inch squares (measure to confirm)
  • Speckled, marbled, or mottled pattern — brown, tan, gray, green, or black
  • Slightly flexible when warm, brittle when cold
  • Often installed directly on concrete basement floors
  • Black adhesive (mastic) visible where tiles are missing or lifted
Asbestos content: 15–25% by weight is typical for pre-1975 9×9 VAT.

Don't pull, chip, sand, or vacuum suspect tiles. Intact tile is manageable. Disturbed tile is not.
